Cardiff University Rugby Club is thrilled to announce the resounding success of its Freshers Rugby Trials, which saw over 120 first-year students come out to showcase their skills, passion, and commitment to rugby.
Held at the Talybont and Cardiff University Sports Fields, the event marked a strong start to the 2024/2025 season and highlighted the growing enthusiasm for rugby among new students.
The trials, which took place over the course of a three-days, attracted freshers of varying experience levels, from seasoned players to those keen to take up the sport for the first time. This overwhelming turnout reflects the inclusive spirit of Cardiff University Rugby, offering a platform for everyone, whether they aspire to compete at a high level or simply enjoy the camaraderie of the game.

Club Chairman, Tom Creber, expressed his excitement about the future:
“The turnout this year has been phenomenal. To have over 120 freshers attend shows just how much rugby is thriving at Cardiff University. We’ve seen a wide range of talent and are excited to integrate these players into our teams. This year’s group has tremendous potential, and we’re looking forward to seeing them develop throughout the season.”
The trials were designed to assess each player’s abilities through a series of drills, fitness tests, and games. The club’s coaching team, led by Gwylim Evans, was impressed by the talent on display. They now face the exciting challenge of building strong, cohesive teams from this talented pool of players.
Head of Rugby Chris Davies commented:
“It’s inspiring to see so many freshers excited about joining the rugby community here. We’re committed to helping every player reach their potential, whether they want to compete at the highest levels of university rugby or simply enjoy the social aspect of the sport.”

With both the men’s and women’s teams gearing up for competitive fixtures in the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) league, Cardiff University Rugby is in a strong position to continue its legacy of success. The club is also known for its vibrant social scene and its commitment to inclusivity, offering students a well-rounded experience both on and off the field.
As the freshers prepare to join their respective squads, the club is eager to see the impact this new cohort will have on the 2024/2025 season and beyond.
