Met come out on top of Cardiff Clash

Match Report by Charlie Thomas

Cardiff Met were 41-7 winners in this year’s first Cardiff Clash after a dominant second half display in front of a crowd of over five thousand at Cardiff Arms Park.

A blistering start from Met resulted in tries from winger Dylan Scott, hooker Lewys Walsh and second row Oli Smith, and gave the Archers a 17-point lead.

Cardiff University did have their chances spending a long period of time camped on the Met try line. Twice the home team were held up, as well as knocking on a golden chance when a try seemed certain.

Number 8 Oliver Stirling did finally bulldoze his way over the goal line thanks to a well worked line-out move.  Cardiff University managed to pull the score closer again with a conversion from fly-half Harrison James, making the score 7-17 going into the break.

The second half, however, was a one-sided affair. Three tries from Met, by winger Henry Kirwan, substitute Alex Terry and Chris Johnson, as well as a prolific kicking display by replacement Vikas Meijer saw the game finish 7-41 to the away side.

Despite the disappointing second-half performance, the Cardiff ‘Rangers’ sang proudly for the whole 80 minutes, displaying pride in the University team.

Cardiff Uni captain Tom Caple said, ‘they go through some tough times but show up every time and as a playing group we genuinely appreciate it’.

Cardiff University will look ahead to Loughborough away next Wednesday, and hope to come away with a better result.
