Both head coach Chris Davies and captain Billy Moxey were in high spirits following a 32-15 victory over rivals Swansea that saw Cardiff crowned Welsh Varsity champions at the Arms Park.
Reflecting on his side’s victory, Davies said, “Incredible, bit of an arm wrestle at the start but we had some good messages at half time. We felt as if we could probably move the ball around a bit more and they did that in the second half.” Davies continued, “That’s three times we’ve beaten Swansea this year, so I think they’re all going to have a good night tonight’”
Commenting on a difficult first half for the hosts, after which Cardiff went into the break 10-15 down, Davies said, ‘Exactly what we thought was going to happen, we wanted to manage the game a little. We knew Swansea were going to throw everything at us, so we were prepared for it, we managed the storm so to speak.”
Discussing a much improved second half, with Cardiff scoring 22 unanswered points, Davies said, “They’re quality players, I think they weren’t brave enough in the first half and they were brave second half. They started playing from kick offs and it worked and the credit is all theirs”.
Reflecting on the season as a whole, Davies said, “Probably weren’t brave enough at times, struggled with belief at times, but when we had belief and when we were brave, we caused a lot of teams a lot of problems.” Davies continued, “Going into next season we lose a lot of players, we need to find recruitment now, we need to build. It’s university rugby, it’s rollover, so we’ve just got to keep improving, keep challenging and keep going again.”
Finally, Moxey, who has now played his last game for Cardiff, reflected on his time representing the club.
“It’s a range of emotions playing for Cardiff, a lot of highs and a lot of lows but I think that’s the perfect ending”. Moxey continued, “You never know with Swansea, that game could go either way and to put a margin on it like that, I don’t think we’ve ever done the triple on them so over the moon.”
